Counseling and Care Unit
Mission and Purpose
The establishment of the Counselling and Care Unit is to help proactively and reactively address issues related to healthy behavior and mental health of school-aged children in primary schools. The Counselling and Care Unit is committed to creating a safe, healthy and supportive learning community by providing support to all school counsellors in their implementation of data-driven, standards-based, comprehensive school counselling services to address the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. In addition, the Unit collaborates with stakeholders to remove institutional and environmental barriers, close achievement and opportunity gaps, and ensure access, equity, and success for all students.
Goal
Improve the quality of life for students and their families by focusing on developing their psychological and emotional wellbeing; empowering them with skills, knowledge, and attitudes to achieve academic success, advance career development, and citizen readiness.
Services
- Mental Health Care Plan Development for students with chronic Emotional/Behavioral Disorders and social issues (in collaboration with the NaRCIE, School-Community liaison/Security and private sector providers as appropriate)
- Short-term intervention for students and families to support students in times of crisis
- School-wide support and teacher training to support classroom management, positive school culture, and behavior intervention
- Individual, small group, and large group counselling services
